CLUB RUNS - Taw Velo has two groups: a faster training group and a social group. The Taw Velo Sunday club runs meets at the North Devon Leisure Centre for a 9am start and go to where the wind takes us - it's a case of how we feel on the day!
Routes can be anything from 50 to 70 miles without a stop. However, there is a more social group that stop for tea/coffee mid-way through the ride. The January/February runs are training rides and can go almost anywhere, usually in a big loop. October to Christmas we may make the occasional longer ride to a Tea-stop.
By riding in company the miles soon slip by. There's usually a tea stop at halfway and it's a very sociable way to improve your cycling and fitness, chat with fellow members and a good opportunity to seek advice if you have a technical problem. If you find long distance rides appealing there are members who undertake cycle tours, Sportives and Audax events. Please note, as a cycling club a good general level of fitness is required. As a minimum hurdle you should be able to ride at least 20miles in one go at an average of 13mph.
The purpose of these runs, for experienced riders, is mainly steady base miles and a chance to meet club mates. For inexperienced riders it is also base miles and a chance to meet the club, but more importantly, it is learning how to ride in a group and also some of the unwritten rules of club riding and racing.
For weekday training over the winter we ride the Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6.00pm) at Barnstaple Square, for road bikes.
